Aroha Kaikorai Valley
Kaikorai Valley is home to a large community with a mix of industrial and residential buildings and magnificent green spaces. The centerpiece of Kaikorai Valley is Kaikorai Stream, which threads its way through many historical features and modern developments. It has seen the best and worst of times. Now it's time for us to band together and make a difference.
Aroha Kaikorai Valley (AKV) is a registered charity, community and business-led organisation. Together, we can bring about massive change. We can eliminate weeds and pests, plant native plants to enhance our environment while attracting birds and cleaning up our waterways.
Some great work has already been started by various organisations, and AKV is hoping to build on that progress by teaming business support with people power to make Kaikorai Valley as beautiful and healthy as possible.
We see AKV as a vehicle to work with business and community groups to help facilitate the general overall health and improvement of the valley environment
The goals
The cleanest water possible to Kaikorai Estuary
Elimination of pest plants such as ivy, gorse and broom
Replacing pest plants with native and significant trees to enhance these areas
Eliminate predators and attract native birds into the valley by getting a trap in every commercial and residential property in the valley
It is a long term project where small incremental changes will help bring these goals to fruition. Change will come from awareness, education and action. If we can gather enough people motivated to dovetail into the great work already being done we can make a difference.
Key native species: Kererū, kōtare karearea/falcon, ruru/morepork
