Stop! Hammer Time!

Kids from all over Dunedin had an awesome time building rat trap boxes as part of the New Zealand International Science Festival.

With help from City Sanctuary and Predator Free Peninsula, more than 100 rat traps were hammered out at Mitre 10 MEGA in South Dunedin. Special thanks to Mitre 10 who provided the materials and staff expertise to help kids with the tools. They also donated another 100 trap boxes to support our mahi!

Watch this video of Zac from City Sanctuary sharing what happened on the day — if you can hear him over the sound of hammers!

Build your own trapping tunnel

A trapping tunnel is a box that you can put a rat trap inside. It has a mesh screen with a hole that rats and mice can get into. The back can be removed to make it easier for you to bait, check and re-set your traps. These help keep pets and children safe and reduce the likelihood of catching non-target species.

They are easy to make at home and a great activity for children to do with supervision and help from an adult. Want to build your own trap box at home? Click here for our how-to-guide!
